Still looking for a new daily driver for my dad and came across a 2005 Yaris. Seemed okay for the age so after having a look around I requested a test drive. The guy then immediately asks if were buying it today. We replied how can we know that we havent even driven it yet. Oh you can only drive it if you’re buying today. Just blanked the dude and went somewhere else.
Its not like we were time wasting either we had money and we were looking to buy a car, but test driving is kind of an important part of the process... Plus saying “it drives as good as it looks” doesnt make a test drive unnecessary. He said “oh I dont want people just driving it to say theyve driven it.” Yeah sure i only wanted to go home and boast that id driven a decade old yaris. Some people...

Perfect word to describe the dude.

The Yaris drives as good as it looks? I’d say you guys dodged a bullet.

Well, it’s a Yaris... so looks are questionable. Saying it drives as good as it looks implies it drives questionably as well.
My rule of thumb is when it doubt, walk away. Shady dude trying to sell you a shady car under a shady tree. Pass

Haha, theyre okay little cars. Ive driven a couple in the past and theyre dull but solid. Basically the same for the looks, dull but okay.

The Echo hatchback is cute! Too bad we never got them :(

I can’t think of a reason why anyone legit would act this way.

Yeah true. I always walk away if there’s any funny business.

Theyre okay little cars. Nothing amazing but they do the job and are reliable.

Because they hate money and dont want to sell any cars?

Lol what I meant was that’s not a ringing endorsement and for a sales person to say that is crazy.

That’s stupid. I worked at a dealer where our greeting was something like “what car are you interested in buying today?”, but we weren't shutting people down who straight up told us they weren't buying anything today.

Yeah he wasnt very good at his job thats for sure.

The funny thing is we’re actually serious buyers in need of a car soon. He may have just cost himself a sale.

If you’re looking for Yarii in general: test the AC and check for rust. My grandfather (b. 1925) owns one, a late mk1 one like in your picture, and the AC keeps breaking down (expensive!) and the car’s visibly rusting prematurely.

Were looking at base spec ones with no AC so that shouldnt be an issue. Will check carefully for rust though for sure.

I’m guessing commission on a decade old Yaris is so bad he didn’t he didn’t want to waste any time with window shoppers on it. You were totally right to walk away though, what a terrible sales tactic.

Na he was a small indie dealer and owned the place. They were all cheaper cars so selling anything wouldve been good for him.

I wouldn't buy from him. I once had a salesman tell me I couldn't drive a car because they were trying to keep the mileage under 100k. It had 98k...I guess they were worried I was going to take a test drive to California.

Yeah I have no intention of going back. Haha how the heck would they accrue 2k miles worth of test driving.

Maybe he just really likes the Yaris?

He must defend it like a virgin daughter. It shall not be taken for rides by strange men.

He’s old fashioned you must ask for her wheel in holy testdrivamony.
![]() 06/13/2016 at 14:06 |

Ah yes like a traditional gentleman. Ill buy the Yaris a high quality engagement wheel cover to seal the deal.

You’d take it on a 2k mile test drive.
![]() 06/13/2016 at 15:07 |

2k miles is amateur test driving, I want to be the first man to pilot a yaris on the moon.

That’s a good way to put yourself out of business. Who buys a car without test driving it first?

People who have no idea what theyre doing I guess.

Keep your dreams alive but find another Yaris. This one is not for you.
